21 – You Work Hard And Then You Rest

5/23/21

I love the beach. Growing up, my mom made sure that we went to the ocean at least once a year – no matter if money was tight, if we had to pack it in amongst busy summer plans, if it was only for a few days. Many of my favorite childhood memories are set at the beach.

I remember my mom coming alive when she saw the ocean –  it was like the sun, the saltwater, the sand renewed her spirit in ways that nothing else ever did. It still does. Her skin would turn golden brown, and her voice would soften to its most gentle tone. We were happy, and things felt simpler.

I decided months ago that the best way for me to celebrate my graduation, to bookend the past three years that have twisted and molded me into something new, was to take a trip to the beach. So two weeks ago, seven of my friends and I loaded our stuff up and drove to South Carolina.

And I’ve gotta say, I couldn’t have asked for better. A reinvigoration built firmly upon Uncrustables, a Wrangler with its top off, an unplanned day, and an unburdened mind.

Rest. You work hard, and then you rest.

Thank God for hard work, and thank God for rest.

I’m trying to figure out what’s next. I’ll probably keep you all in the loop – the journey of job searching is a whole thing in itself, but I know that it’ll work out.

Here’s to employment. Here’s to extra-sweet strawberries and dinner off the grill. Here’s to kitties who love to catch the breeze in an open, screened-in window.

Lightly,
Leah
